At the onset of World War I in
August 1914, Lusitania, Mauretania
and the newer ‘sistership’ Aquitania
were all officially requisitioned for war duties by the British government. All
but Lusitania were given "official orders", so Lusitania continued
her regular transatlantic passenger services. Today the debate continues whether
the Lusitania was actually on a secret mission to transport much needed raw materials
for weapons production to the British Isles.
On the May 1, 1915 Lusitania left New York for her meeting with destiny.
More than 100 American citizens were aboard, including the wealthy Alfred Vanderbilt.
On May 7th 1915 with the coast of Ireland in sight, German
U-boat U-20 torpedoed Lusitania without so much as a warning. She
sank in 18 short minutes taking 1,195 souls with her. Considering that three
years earlier the Titanic took two hours to sink depite much more serious damage,
one wonders? What was she really carrying on that fateful voyage? Suprisingly
America, did not declare war on Germany until April 1917. The sinking of the Lusitania
contributed to the mood that turned the tide of American public opinion against
Germany and led the United States to join the Allied cause in World War I.
