Scale Plastic Model Kits
The GAMBIER BAY, the nineteenth Casablanca-class ship to be built, was launched
in November, 1943 and first saw action at Saipan and Tinian in June, 1944. After
a short but active career, she was sunk on October 25th 1944 by overwhelming gunfire
from Japanese heavy cruisers during a vicious sea battle near Leyte in the Philippines. Those lucky enough to survive the battle and then the sinking spent two agonizing days in shark infested waters waiting to be rescused. While the sharks picked off the crew, one by one, many of the survivors went mad. Approximately 700 survivors lived to tell the tale.
This is quite a kit. The hull is divided at the waterline to allow a choice of a full or waterline display. The main flight deck is divided at the center expansion joint. All the fine detail that is expected in a kit of this size is there. The flight deck is engraved so you can see the wood and tie down slots. 16 aircraft are included in the kit. 8 TDF's and 8 FM-2's. The FM-2 even has landing gear that looks like the real thing. All the major deck platforms are cast in resin. The various small parts are cast in pewter like metal. An extensive photo-etched brass sheet is also included.
