HMCS SNOWBERRY
Flower Class Corvette
Great Britain required a convoy escort vessel which was capable of being
built quickly and surviving the heavy seas surrounding the British Isles. She
would also have to be highly maneuverable and able to deal with the U-boat threat.
The design adopted was based upon a whale-catcher built in Middlesbrough. 145
of these Flower-class corvettes were eventually built in the UK. They formed
the bulk of the escort vessels which fought the "Battle of the Atlantic."
Their short length and shallow draught made them uncomfortable ships to live
in. After the fall of France, they were modified to enable them to counter the
extended range of the German 'Wolf-packs'.
A fortnight of constant rolling aboard was monotonous and debilitating. Either
because of the need for constant vigilance in the face of those twin dangers,
the sea and the U-boat, or because of the extreme cold of the North Atlantic.
When action came, it could be prolonged and brutal with the aftermath of sinking
of freighters or of other warships within sight. The torpedoing of a corvette
itself would be especially dramatic. Its few compartments below the water line
would cause it to sink with in seconds, with few survivors. Over 20 corvettes
fell victim to the torpedo or the mine during the War.
After the Normandy landings in 1944, the Flower-class gave way to the newer
and faster frigates and Castle-class corvettes. The corvette was born out of
dire need at the beginning of World War Two for something to fill the gap until
the larger destroyers could be brought on line. But they served very well and
never gave the U-boats a moments break due to bad weather.
This kit features a molded plastic hull and structurally detailed decks. Bridge,
funnel, radar turret, lifeboats and dinghies, searchlights and gun mounts are
accurately reproduced. Propeller, windlass, Lewis DC mount and 102mm gun are movable.
Includes decals for HMCS Snowberry (K 166) and USS Saucy (PG-65) versions. 4-colour
signal flags 15 British sailors. 48 pages of modelling and painting instruction.
May be converted to a waterline model by cutting the hull at the appropriate level.
It can also be made in a radio controled model. This kit makes a very attractive
model for collectors, diorama builders and wargamers. Patience is required to
assemble the 620 parts and paint this large vessel.
