Mayflower
1620
In the
effort to escape religious persecution, the Pilgrims organized an expedition to
found a colony in the new world. As originally conceived, the expedition included
another vessel, the Speedwell, but the latter proved unseaworthy. The Mayflower,
crowded with 101 passengers, finally got under way from Plymouth, England, on
September 16, 1620. The ship was headed for Virginia, where the colonists had
been authorized to settle.
As a result of stormy weather and navigational
errors, the vessel made land fall November 21 at the tip of Cape Cod at the site
of present-day wind swept Provincetown, Massachusetts. The Mayflower remained
anchored for the next few weeks while a party from the ship explored Cape Cod
in search of a satisfactory site for the colony. On December 21, having selected
a site, the Pilgrims disembarked from the Mayflower and founded Plymouth Massachusetts,
the first permanent settlement in what would one day become the United States
of America.
