Bluenose
Grand Banks schooner 1921

The Bluenose was built in Lunenburg Nova Scotia in 1921 to fish the cold waters of the Grand Banks off New Foundland. A salt banker, she stayed out until her holds were full, using salt to preserve her catch. To encourage the development of faster schooners the Halifax Evening Mail and the Halifax Herald offered a prize of US$4000 to the schooner that won a series of 40 mile races. Bluenose beat New England's Elsie in 1921. She won and held the International Fisherman's Trophy Cup for 17 years! She was lost on a reef off the coast of Haiti in 1946.
