This hardworking ancestor of the famed Friendship sloop,
were built from the 1860's to the turn of the century. They were the basic in-shore
fishing boat preferred by the lobstermen of Muscongus Bay, a body of water known
for contrary winds, strong tides and numerous rocky ledges. These sloops were
deep center boarders of moderate power. Typically, the sloops were small, having
only a jib and mainsail. The mast did not have shrouds, and the gaff was hoisted
by a single halyard. Noted for their speed, these handy and seaworthy crafts were
used along the Maine coast for lobstering and transporting lobsters from the islands
to central shipping ports.
