Wooden Ship Kits
Following WWI with the increased availability of reliable, inexpensive
gas engines, the lobstermen of Maine were attracted to round bottom, double wedge
launches as an alternative to the Friendship Sloop or powered dories. The most
useful and attractive feature of these launches is their ability to maintain good
speed and handle well in rough or choppy weather. This design has had almost universal
acceptance among the lobstermen because its speed allows doubling the length of
trap line and it is fully capable of hauling the 200 pounds or more of weight
that makes up a day's catch. Characteristics of the modern lobsterboat. Round
bottom, double-wedge hull. A single inboard
gas or diesel engine. A small forward cabin and windshield shelter for the helmsman
open, decked cockpit aft. Length varies from 20 to 40 feet. Built of cedar planking
over oak frames. The model illustrated is based on a boat built in the Boothbay
Harbor region and is very typical of the many thousands used along the Maine coast.
